COVID-19: ALEX MBATA DOLES OUT N20M TO IMO GOVERNMENT TO FIGHT PANDEMIC

He promises to equip one General Hospital. As the dreaded Covid-19 Pandemic raises serious concerns in Imo State, a renowned philanthropist, business mogul and former Pro-Chancellor of Imo State University, Prince Alex Mbata has thrown his weight behind the move to free Imolites from the scourge by donating a whopping N20m(Twenty Million Naira) to the state government to beef up containment of the spread of the virus.

The gesture, applauded by Imolites as a welcome development is the first major private contribution to support government in fighting the global pandemic in Imo State. In a chat with the Moment Newspaper shortly after the donation on Thursday, 9th April, 2020, Prince Mbata who is the chief Executive Officer of ABM Global Industries said he believes that Imo State Government needs the assistance of wealthy citizens in the fight against Covid-19. According to him, “government cannot fight Covid-19 alone which made me to make my widow’s mite donation.

It is a call to secure the precious lives of our people and I am doing it prayerfully, hoping that God will protect our people from falling victims of the pandemic”. Prince Mbata, however, called on the citizens of the state to ensure they played their part by adhering to the instructions from medical experts with regards to social distancing, regular hand washing etc. He further revealed that he had requested the state government to allow him to equip one of the ‘glorified buildings’ to a modern hospital.

Though, insulated from active politics, Prince Mbata has built a reputation of relieving the needy and contributing in infrastructural development to alleviate the sufferings of Imolites. One of such is the construction, 2 years ago of a 5 kilometer stone based asphalting of network of roads in his Ngwoma Obube Community in Owerri North Local Government Area. With this donation; Prince Mbata has apparently tasked the Philanthropic instincts of wealthy Imolites to come forward and support the State government for the safety of its citizens. Imo State is yet to record any case of the virus which has currently infected over 300 persons across 16 states in the country.
