Last week the outgoing governor of Imo State Owelle Rochas Okorocha said in a press briefing at the government house that his administration expended a whopping #30 billion to erect 30 new hospitals in the state.

According to the governor the hospitals include the 27 general hospitals built in each of 27 local governments of the state, the Ochiedike Diagnostics centre and two recently built mother and child hospitals erected at the former sites Ekeonunwa and New market. Since the revelation last week there has been serious public outcry because the claim is not only spurious but also unbelievable. The generality of Imo people who have critically appraised the block works say that the cost of building the 30 hospitals is not in the neighborhood of such disclosed amount. According to them for the governor to say such block works without a single piece of medical equipment gulped #30 billion is mindless. Having taken a critical survey and appraisal of the projects in question which most of them have been abandoned to take over by bushes let alone completing and furnishing them with medical equipment as to make them complete health facilities we therefore corroborate the stand of imo people. Since the money spent belongs the public we add that the incoming government should organize public hearing on the issue and other issues for imo people to hear how their money should be recovered. Anything short of this may not aggur well.
