Recently, I came across   a pamphlet titled " Taking our Destiny in our hands" produced by a group known as the Imo Coalition, which incorporates the Imo Network Group, Association of Imo Professionals, Imo Progressive Lawyer's Forum and Imo Bilie Initiative.

The pamphlet states that the need for every Imo citizen to be concerned about who becomes their Governor in 2019 cannot be overemphasized for reasons that are clear.  It goes on to state that "Imo state deserves the best but yet we have never been privileged to get the average".
It recalled that in 2011, every Imo citizen was so fixated on ensuring that Ikedi Ohakim did not get re- elected that no one cared about who would take over". The authors pointed out that "we are about to make the same mistake again as it appears Imo citizens today are more concerned about who they don't want or the party they don't want than with who they want" They said their initiative  is an" attempt to remind Imo citizens that it will be better to focus on the character of the person we would like to be our Governor in 2019, look for such a person and give him our total support in whichever party the person is found".
Under the heading THE GOVERNOR OF OUR CHOICE members of the coalition enumerated and explained ten qualities they desire in whoever they must support.
A HUMBLE PERSON WITH A MODEST LIFESTYLE.  "Modesty and humility are great virtues required for true leadership. Anyone who lacks them can never provide good leadership. Anyone who has a flamboyant lifestyle cannot manage public funds. People with genuine wealth and attainment are hardly flamboyant."
A PERSON OF MEANS BUT NOT NECESSARILY A MONEY BAG.
"The only way to assess someone's true humility and modesty is when you give him means, money or power. If a person already has those, and he remains humble and modest, then he is genuine."
EXCELLENT CAREER HISTORY AND OUTSTANDING TRACK RECORDS." We need people who have managed people and resources before coming into politics so we can easily assess their ability. We don't need career politicians or people whose life achievement is appointment as Personal Assistant, Special Adviser, Commissioner House member etc without any previous known career history. We do not need Government contractors"
A PROPERLY AND WELL EDUCATED PERSON.
“Education liberates the mind. What Imo state needs now is someone with a proper education, with verifiable certificates who must have classmates"
A PERSON NOT GIVEN TO DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE AND OR LICENTIOUSNESS.
" We are not asking for a saint, but we must demand for that person that lives a life of moderation and self discipline"
A PERSON WITH A STABLE HOME AND GOOD FAMILY HISTORY
Some one's family tells a lot about of the person's character. A person who cannot successfully manage a home may not manage an office well"
A PERSON WHOSE INTEGRITY IS NOT IN DOUBT
"The person's source of livelihood must be clear and not in doubt. Emergency millionaires cannot be entrusted with public treasury".
A GOOD MANAGER OF PEOPLE AND RESOURCES
"Known to be honest, firm and fair in his dealings with people. Attestations from genuine acquaintances will be required.
MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY SOUND
The person must be given a clean bill of health and must be seen to be both physically and mentally sound.
PREFERABLY FROM OWERRI THEN OKIGWE AND LASTLY, ORLU IN THAT ORDER OF PREFERENCE.
These are noble and desirable qualities to expect of anyone who aspires to govern Imo state at this point.
Of all those clamouring to get into Government House Owerri next year, who fits the Bill? Who best meets the qualities enumerated above? In short WHO DOES THE CAP FIT?
Members of the Imo Coalition, the authors of the pamphlet and Imo citizens need not look further. One candidate fits the bill. He meets all the qualities listed and more.
He has lived and worked in Imo state for thirty five years and all his businesses have their headquarters in the state. In those thirty five years he has contributed immensely to the social and economic development of the state in various ways including job creation and philanthropy.
This is unlike many of those who have shown interest in governing Imo state.
Most of them are birds of passage without residency or even proper campaign offices, operating their campaigns from hotels and guest houses.
They have no stake beyond their ambitions to be Governor. They have come to gamble, if it works out fine, if it doesn't, they carry their bags and return to where they came from.
To further confuse the people they champion acts of emergency philanthropy which die once they don't get what they are looking for.
The sad aspect is that many of these emergency philanthropists have contributed immensely towards the impoverishment of the people and are giving back a fraction of what they have stolen so the people can vote for them to have greater access to the treasury. Nde Imo our destiny is indeed in our hands. We are in an unusual situation. If Imo state is to survive and thrive, we must refrain from doing things the usual way. We must elect a man of proven capacity, character and integrity to govern us. Nde Imo we must support and elect Mr. Frank Nneji OON to govern Imo come 2019. The stage is set. Let us, for once, put our best foot forward. We will not regret it.
