Tragedy struck at the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri on Wednesday afternoon when a man fell face down on his working tool and was pierced through by it.

Eye witnesses say the man, middle aged and unidentified, was using a sledge hammer to work on the roof of a building. The sledge hammer fell first and shockingly positioned its long upwards and the man who also lost balance fell squarely on it, getting pierced severely.

Our sources on arrival took photos of the victim showing the end of the tool largely going through the chest and shoulder blades and coming out of the neck. The medical personnel quickly rallied round, put him on oxygen and whisked him to the emergency unit of the hospital.

“He may survive. There are little chances, especially with good surgical treatment and if vital organs are unaffected”. One of the hospital workers said on condition of anonymity.
